BCCI have appointed Devajit Saikia as their new Secretary, as the apex insititution for cricket in India have finally placed Jay Shah's replacement at the helm. The official confirmation of the decision came on Sunday, January 12, as Devajit Saikia attended a meeting with Roger Binny (BCCI President).

Who Is Devajit Saikia?

Devajit Saikia is a former wicket-keeper batsman, who represented Assam at domestic level. The former cricketer is well-versed with the grassroot level cricket, and his appointment can be seen as a 'potential' message from BCCI that further work will take place at all levels of domestic cricket in the country.

A Huge Task Ahead For Devajit Saikia

Devajit Saikia comes-in at a time, where the current state of Indian Cricket looks absolutely in distraught, as a disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 campaign has raised eyebrowds over the depth of the national side.

Inspite of being the biggest producer of world-class cricketers, and also the richest board, BCCI have failed to produce quality fast bowlers for overseas conditions as of late.

An injury to Mohammad Shami left Jasprit Bumrah helpless in Australia, as other bowlers failed miserably to complement the excellence of Jasprit Bumrah, who stood out there in the middle as the lone warrior for India, constantly troubling Australian batters, and when even Indian batters failed to click, Jasprit Bumrah registered some vital and key runs on the board.

Controversies have surfaced around the 'Mr. Fix It' issue, as several reports have pointed towards the unrest that there is,  currently in the dressing room.

It will be interesting to see the stance of Devajit Saikia on the form and place of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as the duo have failed to click for the nation in the recently-concluded BGT 2024-25.

With ICC Champions Trophy 2025 coming up, and before that the England series, there is certainly a selection headache for the newly appointed BCCI Secretary.
