While Ireland registered a historic win in the one-off Test match in Abu Dhabi, their first-ever in the longest format of the game, Afghanistan won the first ODI of the three-match series by 35 runs. The two teams will now square off in the second ODI at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on March 9 (Saturday).

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star performer in the ODI series opener with the opener slamming a hundred. The right-handed batter scored 121 off 117 deliveries, an innings studded with 8 fours and 6 sixes as Afghanistan posted 310/5. In response, Ireland could only muster 275/8 despite Harry Tector's century (138 off 147). Lorcan Tucker also scored 85 off 76 balls but none of the other batters could step up with all other batters only managing single digit scores. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the bowlers for the winning team, returning with figures of 4/51.
