WATCH: SpaceX Starship Explodes Minutes After Texas Launch. Here's How Elon Musk Reacted

Eyewitnesses of the SpaceX blast captured footage of glowing orange fragments streaking through the sky near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, leaving smoky trails in their wake.

A test flight of SpaceX's upgraded Starship prototype ended abruptly on Thursday when the rocket broke apart minutes after its launch from Texas. The incident caused disruptions in air traffic over the Gulf of Mexico as airline flights had to reroute to avoid potential debris.

The Starship, equipped with its first test payload of mock satellites, lost communication with SpaceX mission control just eight minutes after taking off at 5:38 p.m. EST (2238 GMT) from the company's South Texas facility.

According to Dan Huot, SpaceX Communications Manager, the loss of contact indicated an "anomaly with the upper stage." Soon after, the company confirmed the spacecraft's failure.

Eyewitnesses, as reported by Reuters, captured footage of glowing orange fragments streaking through the sky near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, leaving smoky trails in their wake. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it was reviewing the situation while flight-tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed that at least 20 commercial flights adjusted their routes or were diverted. Ground operations at Miami International Airport also experienced temporary disruptions.

How Did Musk React?

In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared a video of the debris field, commenting, “Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed.”

Key Details Of Test Mission

This mission marked SpaceX's seventh Starship test since 2023. The vehicle, a "new generation" prototype with significant upgrades, featured an upper stage two meters taller than earlier versions. The test plan had anticipated a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean approximately an hour after launch. However, the failure occurred well before this phase.

Despite the setback, the Super Heavy booster, which powers the initial stage of the Starship launch, successfully returned to its launchpad. It completed a precise descent using its Raptor engines to land on the mechanical arms of the launch tower.

SpaceX's test strategy often involves pushing prototypes to their engineering limits, with previous tests resulting in dramatic failures. However, this incident represents a rare disruption to air traffic caused by the company’s spaceflight operations.

Starship is a cornerstone of Musk's ambitious goals to transport humans and cargo to Mars while supporting satellite deployment in Earth’s orbit. The mishap highlights the challenges SpaceX faces as it continues to develop its flagship spacecraft.
