Origin Of The Term Pind Daan
The term 'Pind Daan' originates from the Garbhadhana ceremony, which occurs when a child is conceived in the mother's womb. The child first appears as a 'pind', a form and enters the womb in this form. When a person passes away and attains salvation in the heavenly realm, Vaikuntha, their family members perform the Pind Daan for that same pind.
What Is Pind Daan
The head of the Panchayati Niranjani Akhada, Mahamandaleshwar Premanand Puri Ji Maharaj, says that the soul, which first appeared as a 'pind' in the mother's womb, undergoes a journey from entering the womb to merging with the Supreme Being. When the Pind Daan is performed, it is believed to signify the soul's journey from the mother's womb to the divine. When the family performs the Pind Daan, it is believed that the soul attains liberation.
Why Do Naga Sadhus Or Sannyasis Perform Their Own Pind Daan?
The head of the Panchayati Niranjani Akhada, Mahamandaleshwar Premanand Puri Ji Maharaj, says that the only meaning of taking sanyas or renunciation is to become one with the essence of renunciation, and for this, unity with renunciation is essential. After achieving this unity, one has no personal relationships anymore. At this point, every living being in the world is considered as part of oneself, and we live our life as such. Premanand Puri Ji Maharaj explains that a sanyasi always performs his own Pind Daan because when one takes sanyas, it is believed that a new birth has occurred. When this new birth happens, only upon death does the true new life begin. In the tradition of sanyas, before attaining the new birth, one performs their own Pind Daan for the past birth, after which they become a sanyasi and, eventually, a Naga.
What Is The Significance Of Gaya In Pind Daan?
In Hinduism, Gaya holds a special significance for performing Pind Daan. According to Premanand Puri Ji Maharaj, Pind Daan is done in Gaya because of the presence of the Falgu River, which holds great importance. Although both the Ganges and the Falgu River are considered equally significant, scriptures state that performing rituals here can lead to liberation, symbolised by the divine Kamadhenu. It is said that Pind Daan in the Ganges represents the form of Kamadhenu, as the Ganges is also a source of liberation, leading to salvation and access to Vaikuntha. Thus, people perform Pind Daan on the banks of the Ganges as well. Gaya, however, holds a distinct and special place in the scriptures.
Pind Daan Of Lord Krishna's Ancestors Was Performed In Ujjain
Premanand Puri Ji Maharaj says that all pilgrimages hold equal significance, and they were created according to the conditions of the region. In ancient times, people travelled by bullock carts or on foot, which is why every region had its own pilgrimage site. Each place has its own sacred river, and it holds as much importance as the Falgun River. He also mentioned that Lord Krishna's ancestors' Pind Daan was performed in Ujjain, at a place called Siddh Vat. He further stated that the Kshipra River is also considered to be a giver of liberation. Wherever our pilgrimages are located, there is always a sacred river associated with it.
Do People Avoid 84 Lakh Rebirths After Performing Pind Daan?
Maharaj Ji says that Pind Daan grants liberation to the soul, and it stops the soul from wandering through the 84 lakh species. If the rituals are performed correctly, there is no rebirth for the soul. He mentions that he has travelled across almost 40 countries, covering about 400,000 kilometers, but has never heard of anyone experiencing rebirth. He explains that the traditions of our Sanatan Dharma are so rooted in scriptures and so scientific because our sages and scientists conducted research to develop these practices. When these rituals are performed with the correct mantras, the soul attains liberation.
