Want Those Viral Ghibli AI Portraits? You’ll Need A ChatGPT Subscription — Or Try These Workarounds

While there are some alternatives to ChatGPT, including Grok AI, don’t expect them to mimic Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn magic perfectly.

The internet is abuzz with Studio Ghibli-style AI-generated portraits, thanks to OpenAI’s latest image-generation update for ChatGPT. From Sam Altman to Sachin Tendulkar, everyone’s been testing the new feature, but there’s a catch — you won’t have much luck creating these dreamy anime-style images unless you’re a paying ChatGPT user.

No ChatGPT Subscription? No Ghibli Magic for Now

OpenAI initially announced that its new image generation tool would be accessible to all tiers of ChatGPT, including free users. However, the company later clarified that the free-tier rollout has been delayed. And even when it does arrive, there’s a limit: free users will only be able to generate three images per day.

This means that unless you have a Plus, Pro, or Team plan, you’re currently out of luck when it comes to conjuring up those stunning, Ghibli-inspired AI artworks. ChatGPT’s recreations are among the most authentic and stylistically accurate ones available — something that free users will have to wait to experience.

Looking for Free Alternatives? They Exist, But…

If you’re unwilling to shell out $20 for a ChatGPT subscription, you do have a few alternatives. Elon Musk’s Grok AI, built on Grok 3, is one such option. It can generate Ghibli-style images at no cost, but let’s be honest — the results are a bit hit-or-miss. While Grok does a passable job, its output lacks the nuanced charm that ChatGPT’s model achieves (see below).

Google’s latest Gemini model also supports AI-generated images through Google AI Studio, but there’s a major roadblock—it refuses to transform real photos into Ghibli-style artworks. So, if you were hoping to see yourself as a Miyazaki character, Gemini isn’t your best bet.

App-Based Solutions: Beware the Paywalls

Several mobile apps, such as Remini and ToonMe, claim to convert real-life photos into cartoon versions, including anime-inspired styles. However, these apps often hide their best features behind paywalls. While they might help you get an animated look, don’t expect them to mimic Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn magic perfectly.

For now, if you want the most authentic Ghibli-style AI portraits, ChatGPT remains your best bet — but only if you’re willing to pay. Otherwise, free users will just have to wait for OpenAI to roll out the feature beyond its premium tiers finally. And even then, three images per day? Better choose wisely.
