Why Is The Kumbh Mela Held In Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, And Nashik?

During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), when the gods and demons were struggling for the nectar pot, a few drops of nectar fell at 12 places, four of which were on Earth and eight in the heavenly realm. The four places on Earth where the nectar dropped are Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. It is said that the drops of nectar fell in the rivers of Shipra in Ujjain, the confluence (Sangam) in Prayagraj, the Ganges in Haridwar, and the Godavari in Nashik. This is why the Kumbh Mela is held at these locations. Devotees believe that by taking a holy dip in these rivers, they can be freed from sins.

When Is The Kumbh Mela Held In Haridwar?

The Kumbh Mela takes place in Haridwar every 12 years. According to scriptures, anyone who bathes in the Ganges during the Kumbh Mela is believed to attain salvation and be liberated from all sins and diseases.

Astrological Basis: The Maha Kumbh is held in Haridwar when Jupiter is in Aquarius and the Sun is in Aries. The last Maha Kumbh in Haridwar took place in 2021, and the next one will be in 2033.

When, where, And Under What Conditions Is The Kumbh Mela Held?

The Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years at all four locations. The timing of the Mela is determined by astrological calculations.

  • In Haridwar, it is held when the Sun is in Aries and Jupiter is in Aquarius.
  • In Prayagraj, the Mela takes place when the Sun is in Capricorn and Jupiter is in Taurus.
  • In Nashik, the Mela is held when Jupiter enters Leo. Additionally, the Singhasth (Nashik Kumbh) is held when the Sun and Moon enter Cancer during the Amavasya (New Moon).
  • In Ujjain, the Singhasth Mela is organised when the Sun enters Aries and Jupiter enters Leo. Since Jupiter is in Leo during Ujjain and Nashik Kumbh, this festival is called Singhasth.
