Celebrating Bhai Dooj: Traditions Across India

Bhai Dooj is celebrated in India under various names reflecting local customs and traditions. In North India, it's known as 'Bhaiya Dooj', where sisters pray for their brother's well being, apply tilak and exchange gifts. In Maharashta, special dishes are prepared for the brothers and the festival is known as, 'Bhau Beej', a symbol of love and care. In some parts of South, the festival is known by 'Bhai Dooj' or 'Yam Dwitiya', and rituals are held to honour Lord Yamraj. In West Bengal, 'Bhai Phota' is celebrated with feasts and family gatherings. Whatever the festival is called, it's celebrated in the same way all across India, and symbolises the bond between brothers and sisters.

Significance Of Offering Coconut

Offering coconut on Bhai Dooj has great significance in Hindu tradition. Coconuts are considered as a symbol of purity, prosperity, and protection. Sisters show love and affection by giving coconuts to their brothers, and also pray for their happiness and prosperity. It is believed that the act of offering coconut removes negative energy and brings good luck to the family.

Furthermore, the coconut's hard shell represents the challenges and obstacles in life, while the sweet water inside symbolizes the rewards of overcoming these difficulties. Thus, gifting a coconut reflects the desire for a strong, supportive relationship and the hope for a prosperous future for both siblings.

Bhai Dooj Puja Timings

In the Hindu calendar, the Dwitiya Tithi starts at 8:22 PM on November 2 and concludes at 11:06 PM on November 3. The most favourable time for the Bhai Dooj puja is from 11:45 AM to 1:30 PM on November 3. It is widely believed that if sisters perform the tilak ceremony during this auspicious period, their brothers will enjoy a longer life, and both siblings will be bestowed with happiness and prosperity.
