Why Bhai Dooj Is Celebrated:
According to mythology, the significance of Bhai Dooj is tied to an ancient story. Once, Lord Yamraj visited his sister, Yamuna, who offered him sacred water from the Yamuna River as a blessing. This water relieved Yamraj of his anger, liberating him from sorrow and trouble. Since then, Bhai Dooj, or 'Yam Dwitiya,' has been celebrated as a symbol of sibling love and a day to seek Yamraj’s blessings for brothers' long lives.
The Story Of Yamuna’s Boon:
After the ritual bath, Yamuna worshipped Yamraj and served him a delicious meal. Pleased by her hospitality, Yamraj offered her a boon. Yamuna requested that he visit her every year on this day and that sisters who honour their brothers on Bhai Dooj be free from any fears. Granting her wish, Yamraj blessed her with precious garments and jewellery before departing. Since then, it has become customary to worship Yamraj and Yamuna on Bhai Dooj.
Bhai Dooj Puja Timings:
According to the Hindu calendar, the Dwitiya Tithi begins at 8:22 PM on November 2 and ends at 11:06 PM on November 3. The auspicious time for the Bhai Dooj puja is between 11:45 AM and 1:30 PM on November 3. It is believed that if sisters perform the tilak ritual during this auspicious time, their brothers’ lives will be prolonged, and both siblings will be blessed with happiness and prosperity.
Rituals For Bhai Dooj:
As per ancient traditions, sisters should face the northeast direction while applying the tilak on their brothers' foreheads, followed by offering sweets and performing an aarti. It is considered auspicious for brothers to present a gift to their sisters in return. Bhai Dooj is a celebration of the deep, unbreakable bond between siblings.
