A spectacular timelapse video of the Milky Way, originally posted to Facebook by the US Department of Interior earlier this month, is being shared widely on social media. The stunning visuals were shot at the Zion National Park in Utah, showing the jagged peaks of the Watchman mountain against a starry backdrop. The video was shot by Avery Sloss, a park ranger at Zion National Park, according to his Facebook bio.
“A star-filled evening is an invitation to appreciate the night sky and all its beauty. @ZionNPS is a great place to watch the Milky Way above the jagged silhouette of cliffs and revel in the dazzling array of stars,” the US Department of Interior said in its May 17 post.
The post on Facebook has over 18,000 views, and it features in several media reports. Watch the video here:
Zion National Park Is An International Dark Sky Park
The Zion National Park was certified as an International Dark Sky Park in 2021, the National Park Service says on its website. Granted by the International Dark-Sky Association, the certification recognises the “exceptional quality of the park’s night skies and provides added opportunities to enhance visitor experiences through astronomy-based interpretive programming”.
According to the website, Zion National Park has installed night-friendly fixtures at its Zion Canyon Visitor Center, Zion Human History Museum, Zion Lodge, and campgrounds. The fixtures direct light downward and do not cast it upward into the sky.
