When Trump joked about playing 'match-maker' for PM Modi

On learning that Modi would be visiting US alone, Trump said that he could 'set Modi up with somebody', said a report in Politico.

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump joked about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bachelorhood recently, reports say. Trump allegedly said that he can play a ‘match-maker’ for PM Modi after his aides told him that Modi has been estranged from his wife for several years, said a report in Politico. Ahead of his meeting with Modi at White House in the year 2917, Trump made the remark, after being told by his men that Modi would not be bringing his wife. As per reports, he said “Ah, I think I can set him up with somebody”. The reports also states that Trump showed lack of familiarity about countries surrounding India. He allegedly did not know about the existence of Nepal and Bhutan, and mispronounced their names as ‘nipple’ and ‘button’. The report said that Trump thought they were all a part of India. This is not Trump’s maiden joke at Modi’s expense. As per a report in Washington Post, Trump imitated Modi’s accent in his conversation about US policy in Afghanistan. Indo-US ties are tense since past few months over India’s import of Iranian oil and a defence deal with Russia. However, Indian PM Modi has invited Trump to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day parade on January 26 but the US President has not accepted yet.
