PM Modi, Imran Khan To Address UNGA Today: Here's What To Expect

Tensions between India and Pakistan have heightened since the former abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Flabbergasted by India’s historic decision, a rattled Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian ambassador.

New York (US): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan PM Imran Khan will be addressing the 74th UNGA session one after other on Friday. While Modi’s speech would revolve on peace, development and combating terrorism in the region, Imran Khan as part of his mendacious propaganda, rake up the Kashmir issue. PM Modi will address the U.N. General Assembly before Imran Khan as world leaders hog the stage for their respective speeches from 6:30 pm (IST). Modi’s speech is listed at No. 4 and will address the platform at around 7:15 pm (IST). Leaders of Mauritius, Indonesia and Lesotho will address the assembly before Modi. Imran Khan is 7th on the list. Reports say Pakistan may organise a protest outside the United Nations building while the UNGA session is underway. Two days ago, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he is "disappointed with the international community" over the Kashmir issue even as he admitted that his country has failed in its attempts to internationalise the matter. On the Kashmir row, Pakistan hasn’t cut any ice with UN Rights Body and has been repeatedly snubbed by the international community on several platforms as India has put forward a strong rebuttal and refused to accept any kind of mediation from US President Donald Trump saying “it’s our international matter”. Several countries have backed India on the issue. "(I am) disappointed by the international community...there's no pressure yet on Modi...we'll keep putting the pressure," Khan had said. Khan's predicament in US was also attacked by Pakistan's Opposition PPP which says he has become a "security risk" for the country and barred from international visits as his irresponsible remarks during overseas tours have harmed the country.
