Indian-Origin Man Attacked With Machete In Australia, Spine Fractured

Despite the severity of his injuries, Anand managed to walk away from the scene and seek assistance. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

A 33-year-old Indian-origin man was left critically injured after a violent machete attack by a group of teenagers in Melbourne, Australia. The incident occurred on the evening of 19 July as Anand was returning home from a pharmacy visit.

According to The Australian Today, Saurabh Anand had collected medicines from Central Square Shopping Centre in Altona Meadows at approximately 7:30 pm. While on a phone call with a friend, he was surrounded by five teenagers. One assailant allegedly rifled through his pockets while another repeatedly punched him in the head until he collapsed.

A third attacker then brandished a machete and held it to Anand’s throat. In an attempt to protect himself, he instinctively raised his arm, only for the weapon to slice through his wrist. "The second strike went through my hand, and the third one through the bone," Anand recounted in an interview with The Age. He also sustained stab wounds to the back and shoulder, leading to a fractured spine and multiple broken bones.

Hand Reattached After Emergency Surgery

Despite the severity of his injuries, Anand managed to walk away from the scene and seek assistance. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors initially feared they would have to amputate his hand. However, after emergency surgery, the limb was successfully reattached.

“All I remember is the pain, and my hand was hanging by a thread,” he recalled.

Australian media have reported that four of the five teenage suspects have since been apprehended. The attack has raised serious concerns about public safety and youth violence in the region.
