Earthquake Of Magnitude 7.4 Jolts Tonga, No Tsunami Warning

An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck off Tonga on Thursday, United States Geological Survey said, as reported by the news agency Reuters. According to USGS, the epicenter was at a distance of 73 km northwest of Hihifo, Tonga, as reported by Reuters. The earthquake was at a depth 212 km (132 miles). The US Tsunami Warning System said that there was no warning of Tsunami after the earthquake.   

On Tuesday, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale jolted 116 kilometres South East of Fayzabad in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed in a tweet. The earthquake occurred at 3:32 am IST on Tuesday and hit at a depth of 120 kilometres. The NCS tweeted, "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.3, Occurred on 09-05-2023, 03:32:23 IST, Lat: 36.47 & Long: 71.59, Depth: 120 Km, Location: 116km SE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan."

Last week, an earthquake of magnitude struck 6.2 near the West coast of Honshu in Japan on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quake occurred at 2:42 p.m. on Friday (local time) at a depth of 8.7 kms. According to USGS, the epicentre was found to be at 37.540°N and 137.305°E, respectively.

As per the authorities, there have been no reports of tsunami damage up to this point. On the shore of the Sea of Japan, Ishikawa Prefecture has experienced long tremors that have the potential to shake tall buildings. The city of Suzu experienced class 3 tremors. They may make it difficult for people to stand still and even topple furniture, according to experts, reported Japan-based NHK World.

Last Thursday, an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale hit Myanmar, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake hit at a depth of 10 km in Myanmar. "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.2, Occurred on 04-05-2023, 05:19:05 IST, Lat: 27.03 & Long: 96.34, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar," tweeted NCS.
