US Capitol Riots: Several legislators of the United States, cutting across party lines have called for the impeachment of Donald Trump as President, in the wake of the unprecedented violence that unfolded at the Capitol building in the heart of the US Capital. Both Democrats and Republicans have condemned the alleged role of the POTUS in inciting the rioters to lay siege on the Capitol on Wednesday overnight, with an intent to overturn the results of the Presidential elections. "We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath," US Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota wrote on Twitter. Several of President Trump's top aides, including national security adviser Robert O'Brien, are considering resigning in the wake of his response to a pro-Trump mob breaching the US Capitol. What is the 25th Amendment? Put in simple terms, the 25th Amendment of the American Constitution contains four sections and deals with presidential succession and disability. It pertains to the situations where a president is unable to do the job but does not step down voluntarily. It tells what happens in the event that the commander in chief can no longer do his or her job but does not voluntarily step down.
It empowers the vice president to temporarily become president, in order to ensure a smooth transition of power in an emergency. It also empowers the vice-president to nominate a vice-president if vacancy is created. The president can act against the effort by the vice-president and the Congress, declaring himself fit for the office in official writing. Then the vice-president and those supporting the impeachment have 4 day to disagree, else the sitting president resumes presidency. In case of disagreement, Congress can settle the matter with a vote. The 25th Amendment allows for the removal of a President. It's time to remove the President.
