'Cannot Tolerate Illegal Entry': US Embassy Reacts After Indian Student Handcuffed, Deported

Day after a video of an Indian student being pinned to the ground and deported from the US at Newark Airport surfaced, US has said that it will not tolerate "illegal entry" or "abuse of visas".

United States on Tuesday issued a statement, a day after the video of an Indian student being handcuffed and deported at a US airport surfaced on social media. The US Embassy in India has said that though the country welcomes "legitimate travellers," it will not "tolerate illegal entry or abuse of visas".

"The United States continues to welcome legitimate travelers to our country.  However, there is no right to visit the United States," a satement by the US Embassy in India said.

"We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of U.S. law," it added.

The eyewitness, who shared the video and photo of the Indian being deported, on his social media account said that the student was pinned to the ground, handcuffed and deported at the Newark Airport. The man also claimed that the Indian student was "treated like a criminal".

“I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night—handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal,” an entrepreneur Kunal Jain wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy.”

The Indian Consulate in New York had acknowledged the incident after the video went viral, confirming that it is in talks with local US authorities regarding the incident.

"We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national faced difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport,” the Consulate said in an official statement. “We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed to the welfare of Indian nationals.”
