Volvo XC90, S90 Get Major Updates In India

While the D5 variants of the SUV get more power to play with, the only variant of the S90 becomes safer to drive

Volvo has been steadily gaining traction in the Indian automotive market. While it isn’t as big as some of its direct competitors in the country right now, it isn’t holding back on any front. News has now surfaced that the Scandinavian carmaker has updated the recipes of two of its cars in India - the XC90 and the S90. While the SUV gets more power to play with, the only variant of the S90 becomes safer to be in.

So how has Volvo managed to make a car, which was already one of the safest in its segment, more safe? Well, the Swedish sedan now comes with radar-based safety which was missing from its recipe all this while. This package brings in safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning and blind-spot detection.

Over to the XC90. In India, it is offered with two different monikers at the back - D5 and T8. The bump in power comes in to the D5 engine option, which is offered in two variants - Momentum and Inscription, and gets seven seats in its configuration. Thanks to Volvo’s Power Pulse Tech, the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine now produces 235PS of power and 480Nm of torque. That’s 7PS/10Nm more than before. This engine comes mated to an 8-speed Geartronic transmission and power is sent to the road via an all-wheel-drive system.

Volvo’s list of main rivals includes its European counterparts. For the S90, there is the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF and the recently launched BMW 5 Series. The XC90, on the other hand, locks horns with the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
