Spied: New Maruti Ertiga 2018 With 6-Speed Manual Transmission

The 6-speed manual transmission is likely to be paired with Maruti’s new and indigenously-developed 1.5-litre diesel engine

The second-gen Suzuki Ertiga made its global debut in Indonesia in April 2018. However, the carmaker is yet to reveal the India-spec model. That said, Maruti has been testing the Ertiga 2018 in the country since late last year. Since the MPV’s global premiere, these test mules have shed some of its camouflage. The latest spy shots show the second-gen MPV with a 6-speed manual transmission with the reverse gear placed in the forward position, right next to first.

Currently, Maruti doesn’t offer such a transmission with any of its offerings. The pre-facelift S-Cross equipped with the 1.6-litre DDiS diesel engine, too, featured a 6-speed manual gearbox, albeit with the reverse gear in its usual rearward position. Hence, the transmission on the Ertiga seems to be a newly developed unit.

Expect the 6-speed manual gearbox to be paired with Maruti’s latest 1.5-litre diesel engine that will make its debut with the Ertiga/ Ciaz facelift. This engine is an indigenously-developed unit, like the Celerio’s 793cc twin-cylinder motor. The twin-cylinder motor failed to do well in the Indian market and the carmaker was soon forced to withdraw it from the hatchback altogether.

Like the twin-cylinder motor, the new 1.5-litre unit is also expected to feature an all-aluminium engine block. The current 1.3-litre engine that powers most of Maruti’s popular offerings, on the other hand, is sourced from Fiat and features a cast iron block. Rivals like Ford, Hyundai (Verna) and Renault (Lodgy) offer cast iron construction, while Honda (City) uses an all-aluminium block. Aluminium blocks are lighter than cast iron ones and has better heat transfer properties too. The new diesel engine should feature SHVS mild-hybrid technology for improved fuel efficiency. The outgoing 1.3-litre diesel engine paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox and SHVS returns 28.09kmpl in the Ciaz and 24.52kmpl in the Ertiga.

Although there’s no official word from Maruti regarding the all-new diesel engine, we expect it to offer over 100PS of max power and somewhere between 200Nm to 250Nm of peak torque. For reference, the Ertiga diesel that is currently on sale puts out 90PS and 200Nm.

The second-gen Ertiga will also be offered with a petrol powertrain. It will be powered by the new 1.5-litre K15B engine that made its debut in the Indonesia-spec model. The upcoming Ciaz facelift, which will be launched before the second-gen MPV, will also get the same engine with Suzuki’s mild-hybrid technology. The new engine is likely to be offered with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic as seen on the Indonesia-spec MPV. Currently, both the Ciaz and the outgoing Ertiga share the same 1.4-litre K14B petrol engine.
