Scorpio To Get New Six-Speed Automatic Transmission

Scorpio To Get New Six-Speed Automatic Transmission

Few weeks ago Mahindra discontinued the automatic variants of its popular SUV, the Scorpio. The automatic variants were launched in July 2015 and came with 6-speed automatic units sourced from Drivetrain Systems International, Australia. The automatic transmission was only available in the top-spec trims, S10 2WD and S10 4WD. But now, the Mahindra Scorpio will be introduced with a new 6-speed automatic unit.

According to sources from Mahindra, the new transmission will be sourced from Aisin, Japan, the same company that supplies automatic transmission units for the XUV5OO. The automatic transmission in the Scorpio and the XUV5OO is likely to be different as both of them have a different drivetrain layout. While the Scorpio is primarily rear-wheel-drive with a longitudinal engine, the XUV5OO has a transverse engine with focus on front-wheel-drive layout.

Mahindra will introduce the new transmission in the Scorpio in a few months, maybe around the festive season. The current Scorpio was introduced in September 2014 and is also due for a mid-cycle update/facelift.

The Scorpio is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which comes with a 5-Speed manual transmission as standard along with an optional automatic transmission. The 2.2-litre engine produces 122PS of power and 280Nm of torque. Interestingly, the XUV500 also has the same engine under its hood but in a different state of tune; 140PS/320Nm. The Scorpio starts at Rs 9.29 lakh and goes up to Rs 15.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It primarily competes with the Tata Safari Storme.
