Rahul Gandhi Criticised By Assam Minister For Not Wearing Traditional Gamosa: ‘Disregard For Assam’s Culture’
Assamese Gamosa Row: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika criticised Rahul Gandhi for allegedly refusing to wear a Gamosa, a traditional Assamese cloth symbolising respect.

Assam minister Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly refusing to wear the traditional Assamese Gamosa upon his arrival in Guwahati. In a tweet, Hazarika accused the Congress party of disrespecting Assamese culture and traditions.
“It’s no secret that @INCIndia has NO respect for Assam’s culture. Today in Guwahati, Shri @RahulGandhi once again proved it by refusing to wear the traditional Assamese Gamosa. His disregard for Assam is well known and today, he didn’t even bother to uphold the dignity of his own party workers,” the minister wrote.
He added, “Insulting traditions, ignoring sentiments – that’s the Congress way.”

Gamosa: A Symbol of Assamese Identity
The Gamosa is a handwoven, white rectangular cloth with red borders and motifs, traditionally offered as a sign of respect and cultural pride in Assam. It is often draped over the shoulders of guests, dignitaries, and elders during public events, religious ceremonies, and cultural functions.
Refusing to accept or wear it is considered disrespectful by many locals, as it is deeply associated with Assamese identity and hospitality.
