The ruling Congress won six of the seven municipal corporations in the civic polls in Punjab for which results were declared Wednesday, officials said. The Congress won in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Abohar, Batala and Pathankot. The outcome of the elections held against the backdrop of the farmers' agitation against the BJP-led government at the Centre has come as a boost for the Congress, which is also eyeing to win the assembly elections due early next year. The result for the seventh corporation was expected later in the day. The counting of votes for yet another corporation will take place on Thursday.

Punjab Municipal Election Results 2021 HIGHLIGHTS: The counting of votes for 2,302 wards of eight municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats is underway amid tight security. According to the data available, there was 71.39 per cent of the 39,15,280 electorate polling on February 14 in the state.
A total of 9,222 candidates are in the fray for election in eight municipal corporations including Abohar, Bathinda Batala, Kapurthala, Mohali, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot and Moga, 109 municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats.
The main contest in the urban local bodies is among the Congress, the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on the eve of ballot count termed the allegations of the BJP and AAP on rigging of civic polls as a typical case of crying foul in the face of their imminent defeat in the election.
Jaitu: Congress win 7 out of 17 wards
As per the latest trends, Congress wins 7 out of the total 17 wards. The independent candidates have won in four seats. The third position went to SAD after the party secured win in three seats.
Congress won four municipal corporations, leading in three others
Congress won four municipal corporations in Punjab on Wednesday and is leading in three others. As per the trends, the congress won the municipal corporation of Bathinda, Moga, Hoshiarpur and Pathankot. News agency PTI reported that the grand old party is leading in Batala, Kapurthala and Abohar.
Hoshiarpur: Congress emerges victorious in 41 out of 50 wards
Out of the total 50 wards, Congress won 41 wards. The Vharatiya Janata Party finished second with victory in 4 wards, AAP won 2, Independent candidates in 3 wards while AAP ans SAD none.
Congress wins 14 wards in Bathinda, 13 in Dera Bassi
In Bathinda municipal corporation, Congress won in 14 wards. In Dera Bassi municipal corporation, the Congress emerged victorious in 13 of the total 19 wards.
