FIR Against Two Youth For Harassing Women Using PM Modi’s ‘Didi…o…Didi’ Tone

This after Bengal Citizen’s Forum, a local civil organisation, filed a complaint in north Kolkata’s Amherst Street Police Station stating the frequent usage of the phrase by the Prime Minister in a certain way is having a negative effect on the youth, Ei Samay reported.

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Didi…o…didi” diatribe against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee in the run up to the high-voltage assembly elections has landed two youth in soup as an FIR has been registered against them for harassing women by calling them in same tone used by him.

This after Bengal Citizen’s Forum, a local civil organisation, filed a complaint in north Kolkata’s Amherst Street Police Station stating the frequent usage of the phrase by the Prime Minister in a certain way is having a negative effect on the youth, Ei Samay reported.

The Bengal Citizen’s Forum also named Prime Minister Modi in its complaint following which the police registered an FIR against two youth for harassing women by calling them “didi…o…didi”, according to a News18 report.

Highlighting that women safety has been one of the key issues of the assembly polls, the members of the local civil organisation also staged a protest outside the police and burnt the Prime Minister’s effigies while demanding his apology. They also demanded exemplary punishment against the accused.

The TMC, which is locked in a fierce battle this time with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the throne of Kolkata, has dubbed the Prime Minister’s tone as sarcastic and derogatory.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra had earlier strongly objected to the Prime Minister’s comment and compared it with the cat-calls made by a ‘street-side fellow’.

“There is something we have in Bengal called ‘rock-er chhele’, which means, a street-side fellow who sits on a wall and who basically calls out to every lady walking past, saying ‘Didi…o…didi’,” she said.
