Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG C 63 To Get Hybrid Power

Expect downsized engines for lower emissions as well

Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG C 63 To Get Hybrid Power

Mercedes-Benz is set to reveal the next generation of the C-Class and its sportier AMG versions around the year 2020. However, will the next-gen Mercedes-AMG C 63 and C 63 S retain the raucous 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 petrol engine? Well, that seems unlikely as the head of Mercedes’ performance division Tobias Moers confirmed the carmaker’s intention of applying hybrid powertrains to their sporty models at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year.

“If you apply proper intelligent hybridisation or electrification to a car which is capable of having an always-on strategy regarding the battery or the whole system, then it’s amazing what you can get out of them… which means for sure the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C 63 will be a hybrid - that’s now a give,” he is reported to have said.

At present, the C63 S, which is still on sale in India, gets a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 510PS of power and 700Nm of torque. This motor is paired to Mercedes’ 7-speed MCT automatic gearbox. With a hybrid powertrain under its bonnet, we expect the next-gen C63 S to deliver a superior output when compared to the existing unit. Sadly, the new setup might not be as loud as it is now. Apart from hybrid power, the next-gen C-Class and its AMG version will get an updated MBUX infotainment system, which is said to be a lot more advanced than the MBUX (NTG 6.0) unit on the upcoming A-Class sedan.

Mercedes-Benz revealed the C-Class facelift at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. The updated model continues to be equipped with a COMAND infotainment system with certain styling cues borrowed from the MBUX architecture. The C-Class cabin’s ‘flowing theme’ now makes it look more premium than before. There’s an all-digital instrument cluster as well. On the outside, the C-Class facelift gets a new set of LED headlamps, a new front grille with diamond studs, redesigned front and rear bumper, and refreshed LED tail lamps.

The carmaker also updated the C-Class LWB for the Chinese market. We expect the C-Class facelift to come to India by 2019 with BSVI engines under its bonnet. Related: Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Launched In India
