Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe Launched In India

The AMG-powered S-Class Coupe received an update in 2017 and it’s this version that has now come to India

Mercedes-Benz’ performance arm, Mercedes-AMG, has launched the S 63 Coupe in India. With this, the performance division of the German luxury carmaker now has a total of 13 offerings in the country. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe costs Rs 2.55 crore in India.

The current generation of the two-door S-Class Coupe made its international debut in 2014. Sadly, it never made it to India. Back then, the S 63 Coupe was powered by a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8 engine that made a total power of 585PS. The luxury carmaker updated the model in 2017 and, in its current avatar, the S 63 Coupe is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes a maximum power of 612PS, making it more powerful than the earlier version despite having a smaller capacity. The new engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and the powertrain is capable of taking the S 63 Coupe from 0-100kmph in under 4 seconds.

While you might think that the sportier S-Class will not look as massive as the S-Class LWB that we get in India, it still is a mighty long vehicle, measuring slightly over 5 metres in length (the S-Class LWB that we get in India measures 5.2 metres). And it’s marginally wider than the S-Class too, at 1913mm.

Talk of the exterior design and it doesn’t really resemble the S-Class from any angle. The updated version of the S-Class Coupe gets the new Panamericana front grille and an updated front bumper. The headlamps are powered by LED and the tail lamps get an OLED (organic LEDs) treatment, in which wafer-thin layers of organic materials are printed onto a glass plate and caused to illuminate.

The two-door S 63 Coupe can seat four people and gets Merc’s Comand infotainment system as standard. It features both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options as a part of the Smartphone Integration Package. There are a host of features available as options, like a Driving Assistant Package with Active Steering Assist.

The S-Class Coupe is basically a two-door version of Mercedes-Benz’ flagship sedan, the S-Class. Mercedes-Benz also has a Cabriolet (convertible) version of the S-Class, but that’s currently not on offer in India. BMW’s 8 Series, which was revealed just ahead of the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, will rival the S-Class Coupe in its various avatars.
