This the result of yet another pioneering tech-driven initiative launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led government in the state.

Mumbai: Are you one of those wishing to apply for a learner’s driving licence? If yes then there’s good news for you as the learner’s driving licence will now be available sitting at home online and you do not have to make a beeline at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) anymore.

Earlier on Monday, Thackeray launched the first-ever Online Learner’s Licence system based on the Aadhaar card. In tune with this, the applicants can now simply log onto the upgraded ‘Sarathi 4.0’ portal and apply for the online driver learner’s licence by paying a nominal fee as earlier.

The applicants will, however, have to take an online test using Aadhaar-based authentication.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab on his part hailed this significant move stating this will bring to an end to the highly stressful exercise as several officers are involved in the same, adding this will end now with the online system of issuing learner’s driving licences and online registering of new vehicles in the state.

Officials of the state transport department also welcomed this move and echoing similar sentiments said this will not only be easier for the people applying for the learning driving licence but also reduce the workload on around 200 government officials at the RTOs.

As per the state transport department, 1.5 million learning driving licences are issued every year.
