The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold day warning in parts of Uttar Pradesh till January 8. Extreme winter conditions are also likely to persist in isolated pockets of Rajasthan on January 7.
Heavy Rain/Snowfall Alert Over Northwest India
According to IMD, certain areas are expected to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorm activity during this week. A fresh western disturbance is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall over northeastern states till January 8. Additionally, an isolated hailstorm will likely affect Arunachal Pradesh and Assam on January 7. Another western disturbance is predicted to bring light to moderate rainfall/snowfall over the Western Himalayan region and Northwest India from January 10 to 12.
Fog Alert in Punjab and Haryana
The IMD has issued a serious dense fog warning for different regions of the country. Visibility and transportation are expected to face significant challenges during late-night and early-morning hours in Uttar Pradesh from January 7 to 9. Some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are expected to witness similar conditions till January 8. The Met Body has also issued an alert for fog in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim today.
Fishermen Warnings
Fishermen are advised not to venture into areas along and off the Somalia coast, the western parts of the southwest Arabian Sea, over the Comorin area, and the adjoining Gulf of Mannar today.
AQI and Weather Forecast for Delhi
The air quality in the national capital was recorded at 310 on Tuesday, under the ‘very poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. There has been a slight rise in minimum temperature and a fall in maximum temperature by up to 1°C over Delhi/NCR during the past 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are in the range of 17 to 19°C and 9 to 10°C, respectively.
Snowfall in Kashmir
Night temperatures saw a slight increase because of overnight snowfall, though they remained below the freezing point. Minimum temperatures were recorded at -0.5°C, a surge from the previous night’s -2.5°C. The famous tourist destination Gulmarg continued to shiver at -4.5°C.
Yellow Warning Issued for Himachal Pradesh
The Weather Department issued a yellow alert for dense fog in Mandi, Una, Kangra, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur districts on January 9 and 10. Despite a brief appearance of the sun, temperatures are likely to remain low.

Forecast: Continued Fog and Upcoming Wet Spell
Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to persist over the Indo-Gangetic plains for the next 3 to 4 days. An upcoming Western Disturbance, interacting with easterly winds, is expected to bring a wet spell to Northwest India from January 10 to 12, 2025.

A Western Disturbance as a trough in the middle and upper troposphere runs along longitude 84° East, north of latitude 20° North. Cyclonic circulations are present over Northwest Uttar Pradesh, Northwest Assam, and the equatorial Indian Ocean. A trough extends from the equatorial ocean to South Kerala across the South Bay of Bengal and South Tamil Nadu. A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect Northwest India from January 10, 2025.
Minimum Temperature Observations
Minimum temperatures below 0°C were reported in many parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Himachal Pradesh experienced temperatures between 0 to 5°C, while Northwest India recorded temperatures between 5 to 10°C. The lowest minimum temperature over the plains was 5.9°C in Churu, East Rajasthan.
Temperature Forecast
A fall in minimum temperatures by 2 to 4°C is expected in Northwest and Central India over the next two days, followed by a gradual rise. A similar trend is forecasted for East India and Maharashtra, while Gujarat is expected to see no significant changes initially, with a gradual rise thereafter.
