Launching Today – 2017 Hyundai Verna
The new generation Hyundai Verna will be launched in India today. Only 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines will be on offer
The South Korean carmaker, Hyundai, is set to launch the new generation Verna in India today. The new Verna is based on a new K2 platform and dons the Fluidic 2.0 design language. It’s bigger and more feature-rich than before and remains the most powerful car in its segment. The 2017 Verna will only be available with two engines – a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel. The last-generation Verna was available with a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel engine as well. While a 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, it gets the option of a 6-speed AT with both engines as well.
Fuel-efficiency figures come in at 17.70kmpl for the petrol MT (earlier 17.01kmpl) and 15.92kmpl for the petrol AT (earlier 15.74kmpl), while the diesel delivers 24.75kmpl and 21.02kmpl for the MT and AT respectively (earlier 21.9kmpl and 19.08kmpl respectively).
Additionally, Hyundai is offering a 3 year/unlimited km warranty, along with 3 years of road-side assitancec (RSA) and 3 map updates with the all-new Hyundai Verna.
The Verna’s new platform is more rigid than before, and that will reportedly make the car safer. It has also led to an increase in wheelbase by 30mm. The new generation car is also longer and wider than before, and you can head to our dedicated report on how the new car is different than the old Verna here.
As far as engine-transmission options are concerned, the new-generation Verna will get the same 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines that were on offer before. The power output also remains the same for both the engines. The main difference lies in the torque delivery as peak torque for the diesel engine is now available at a lower rpm, which should make it more driveable. For the petrol engine, peak torque is now reached at a higher rpm than before. The power-torque output of the new Verna compared to the older model is as follows:

Both the engines come paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter.
The new Hyundai Verna will be available in four variants – E, EX, SX, and SX(O). Automatic transmission with the petrol engine will be available in the EX and SX(O) variants only. Diesel Verna equipped with auto transmission will be available in EX and SX variants. Check out our detailed report on variants and features of the new Verna here.
The new Verna will be equipped with features like ventilated seats, sunroof, entertainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear sun blind, and six airbags in the top variant. ABS and dual airbags are standard across the range. Some of the features that were available in the last gen Verna have been given a miss. Read about them in detail here.
We’re expecting Hyundai to start the 2017 Verna range from around Rs 8 lakh for the base petrol variant and go up to Rs 12.5 lakh for the top-end diesel.
