"The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort," said Buckingham Palace in a statement.

New Delhi: The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6, 2023, Buckingham Palace officials announced on Tuesday. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

“The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort.

“The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.

At 74 by the time of his coronation, Charles would become the oldest monarch in British history and will be the first person after the age of 70 to become emperor.

The coronation ceremony marks the ceremonial adornment of a king's royal power. Charles will be anointed with holy oil. He will be crowned with the St. Edward's Crown. Camilla will also be anointed and crowned during the ceremony. The date of the coronation is also the birthday of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's son Archie. The king's grandson will be four years old that day.

The date was also the wedding anniversary of the late Queen's sister Princess Margaret. King's grandfather George VI had his coronation in the month of May. The service has been held at Westminster Abbey for over 900 years and has almost always been conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury since 1066.
