Yasin Malik's J&K Liberation Front Is Now 'Unlawful Association', Says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday stated that the banned outfit persists in activities that promote terrorism and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government has extended the ban on Yasin Malik's outfit by declaring the 'Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front' as an "unlawful association" for a five-year duration. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the banned group persists in activities promoting terrorism and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir. He further warned that individuals challenging the security, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation will be subject to severe legal consequences.

In 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had banned Yasin Malik's outfit under the anti-terror legislation, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA). Prior to this action, the government had also banned Jamat-e-Islami (JeI-J&K) under Section 3(1) of the UAPA.

The JKLF was similarly banned under the provisions of the UAPA, empowering the Centre to declare any association as unlawful by officially notifying it in the Official Gazette.

Amit Shah in another post on his official X handle stated that the centre has also designated "Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League" as an "unlawful association" for a five-year duration. He stated: "The organization threatened India's integrity by promoting, aiding and abetting the secession of Jammu and Kashmir through terrorism. The Modi government will remain unsparing to people and organizations involved in terror activities."
