The Congress has formally announced its alliance with the Left parties for the upcoming assembly election in West Bengal. Can this tie-up become a hurdle for BJP? Read on.

Kolkata: The Congress has formally announced its alliance with the Left parties for the upcoming assembly election in West Bengal. West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury tweeted to inform about the same. ALSO READ | Farm Laws: Congress On Front Foot As Rahul Launches Fierce Attack On Centre; Priyanka, Others Detained West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday took Twitter to announce the tie-up with the Left parties. "Today the Congress high command has formally approved the electoral alliance with the Left parties in the impending election of West Bengal," he wrote. In 2021, people are going to witness major assembly elections in states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, which are expected to happen in the months of March and April. In October, the central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had approved the West Bengal unit’s decision to have an association with all secular parties in the upcoming assembly election including Congress. The CPI(M) bureau had given its go-ahead to the move which took the final decision to be taken by the central committee. In the 2016 election, the central committee of the CPI(M) had rejected the West Bengal unit’s decision to have a seat-sharing understanding with the Congress. When the results came in, the Congress managed to secure 44 seats while the Left Front ended up with just 32. The fight this year is going to be a fierce one as the usual tussle of TMC vs Left has been replaced with Mamata vs the BJP while the saffron party has already managed to woo Suvendu Adhikari on its side and speculation over more leaders joining in continues. In this scenario, experts opine that the performance of the Congress and Left alliance can play a key role in preventing the saffron wave from inundating West Bengal.
