Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Causes Water Logging In Delhi, Thunderstorm Projected In Neighbouring States

The weather department has projected a cloudy weather for the national capital till January 9 while all operations shall be delayed in Srinagar airport due to continuous snowfall.

New Delhi: Delhiites woke up to gloomy weather on Saturday as heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR in the early hours inundating several areas in and around the city.

The continuous rain brought down the temperature with homeless people taking refuge in night shelters. The weather department has projected a cloudy weather for the national capital till January 9. India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted more rain in the city and adjoining states.

Several parts of the national capital witnessed logging logging issues.  

"Light to Moderate Rainfall/Thunderstorm activity likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan till next 24 hours and subside thereafter," said the weather department in official tweet.

Jammu-Srinagar National Highway closed for vehicular movement for the third day due to continuous rains and snowfall and shooting stones at various places along with the highway, according to the new agency ANI.

"Thunderstorm with moderate to heavy intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and Delhi NCR (Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh) Karnal, Panipat, Gannaur, Sonipat, Kharkhoda, Jhajjar, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh (Haryana) Baraut, Bagpat (UP) and Tizara (Rajasthan)," tweeted India Meteorological Department.

Srinagar has been witnessing continued snowfall that has reduced the visibility at the airport. "The snowfall is likely to continue till 11 am. All operations shall be delayed," informed Srinagar Airport, according to the news agency ANI.
 
Meanwhile, teams of Lahaul Spiti Administration, District Disaster Management Authority and Lahaul-Spiti Police and security personnel of North  and South Portals of Atal Tunnel rescued tourists and locals stuck in the region due to heavy snowfall on January 7.

Air quality in Delhi

The air quality in the national capital improved to 'poor' from 'very poor' category on Friday, a day after the national capital experienced intermittent rain spells, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 273, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).
