Watch Video: Hotel Staff’s Happy Dance After SC Decriminalizes Homosexuality
Today, in a historic decision, the top court delivering separate but concurring judgments, said it is the constitutional and not social morality which will prevail.
NEW DELHI: The judgment by the Supreme Court which unanimously decriminalised part of Section 377 sparked a celebratory dance at Delhi's The Lalit hotel.
Keshva Suri, executive director of the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, is an active campaigner for gay rights in India.
In the video shared by news agency ANI, the Lalit hotel's staff can be seen wearing a rainbow coloured scarves around their necks and performing a flash mob in the hotel.
"All the lawyers and judges who have worked on this are the people to be interviewed and thanked," Keshav Suri said. "I am a nobody but they are the people to be thanked. It is a massive time to celebrate," the Lalit group executive director who is also a petitioner in the Section 377 case told media. Today, in a historic decision, the top court delivering separate but concurring judgments, said it is the constitutional and not social morality which will prevail. The verdict sparked celebrations amongst the LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, intersex and queer/questioning) community across India. Chief Justice Dipak Misra, also speaking for Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, said attitude and mentality has to change to accept the others' identity and accept what they are and not what they should be. Justice Rohinton Nariman, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Indu Malhotra delivered concurring judgments thereby making the verdict of the five-judge bench a unanimous one. The bench also clarified that other aspects of Section 377 of the IPC dealing with unnatural sex with animals and children remain in force.#WATCH Celebrations at Delhi's The Lalit hotel after Supreme Court legalises homosexuality.
