Uttarakhand Glacier Collapse: Massive Floods Hit Chamoli, ITBP Teams Rushed For Rescue Ops; PM Monitoring Situation | 10 Points

The relief operation is on in full swing with scores of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel rushed for the rescue of feared casualties.

At least 150 people are feared missing after a massive flood hit Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district where the water level in Dhauliganga river rose suddenly following an avalanche near a power project at Raini village in Tapovan area of the district.

Avalanche in Uttarakhand | Top 10 Updates

1. News agency ANI on Sunday afternoon reported that the ITBP personnel successfully rescued all the16 people who were trapped in Tapovan Dam and are being shifted to safer places, said Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar. 

2. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat takes stock of the situation near Raini village in Tapovan area.

3. Three bodies have been recovered at the NTPC site in Tapovan area, said the ITBP.

4. Four Army columns, two medical teams and one Engineering Task Force have been deployed at Raini village. Army helicopters are on aerial recce in Tapovan area.

5. Casualties are feared to be between 100 to 150. Teams of ITBP, SDRF and NDRF have already reached the spot. Red alert has been issued, said Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash.

6. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president J.P. Nadda speaks to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister and inquires about the flood situation. He also spoke to Uttarakhand BJP chief Banshidhar Bhagat and asked the saffron party workers to help in the rescue works following protocol.

7. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured the people of Uttarakhand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government stands with them in this difficult time. Asserting that all help will be extended, Shah also informed that three teams of the NDRF personnel have reached the spot and more teams are ready to be airlifted to Uttarakhand from Delhi.

8. Three choppers, including two Mi-17 and one ALH Dhruv chopper, of the Indian Air Force (IAF) stationed in Dehradun and nearby areas for helping in rescue operations in the flood-affected areas. The IAF officials said more aircraft will be deployed as per the requirement on ground.

9. Over 200 jawans are on the job and working in collaboration with local administration, said ITBP spokesperson Vivek Pandey, adding another team has been deployed near Joshimath to raise awareness and evacuate the people. 

10. Expressing concern over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is constantly monitoring the “unfortunate situation” in Uttarakhand. He added India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone’s safety there.
