After tendering resignation to the Governor, CM Trivendra Rawat also announced the decision in a press conference.

When asked the reason behind the resignation, he responded saying, "This is a collective decision. For a better answer, you have to go to Delhi".

"Born in a small village and I got to become the CM. Never imagined that the party would give me such a huge honor. The party considered and jointly decided that now the chance should be given to someone else," he said as he thanked BJP for the opportunity.

"Whoever gets the post next, will fulfill its responsibilities. I extend my best wishes to them," he added.

Prior Developments

CM Trivendra Rawat had met with BJP's top leadership on Monday in Delhi as reportedly, he had been rated "below average" by his own party MLAs who were unhappy with his leadership which they felt would undermine the party's chances in the upcoming Uttarakhand assembly election.

The CM met party President JP Nadda who had earlier met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation. State minister Dhan Singh Rawat and Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank are being taken up as the BJP leaders likely to take over the reins from Rawat.

Earlier, two central leaders BJP vice president Raman Singh and general secretary Dushyant Singh Gautam submitted their report over the situation to JP Nadda on their return from the state where they had gone to speak to state BJP core group members.

The BJP leaders met with MLAs, ministers and also with the Chief Minister and leaders of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). Many MLAs reportedly called for the major leadership overhaul as they felt that otherwise, BJP does not stand a chance of being re-elected to the state.

The final decision on who gets to supersede Rawat is now awaited.
