Uttarakhand: Bus skids off Rishikesh Gangotri Highway, 14 dead; rescue underway

Uttarakhand: In a tragic incident, 14 people died and 9 got injured as an Uttarakhand Transport Corporation bus skidded off Rishikesh Gangotri Highway into a 250 metro deep gorge on Thursday morning. The incident took place near Suryadhar. Immediately after the incident, the local police reached the spot and initiated rescue operation of the 25 people travelling. Later, teams from fire department from Tehri, disaster response team from Chamba also reached the spot for the rescue operation. Even District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate reached the spot. The search and rescue operation is currently underway. More details on the same are awaited. The State government has also directed helicopters be made available to bring the injured to AIIMS. The next kin of the deceased will be provided compensation of Rs 2 Lakh each and Rs 50,000 each will be provided to the injured. Magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the matter.
