'Will You Strip India Of Its Pluralism': Owaisi Lashes Out At PM Modi After He Bats For Uniform Civil Code

Asasuddin Owaisi has hit out at PM Modi for advocating a single set of laws, a Uniform Civil Code, for every citizen of the country.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of trying to "strip India of its pluralism" by introducing a Uniform Civil Code. Earlier in the day, PM Modi said that the country cannot run on two different laws and needs uniform rules for everyone. "How will the country run with different laws? People are only being instigated in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. Two types of laws cannot run the country. The Constitution of India also talks about equal rights for the citizens," PM Modi said at a rally in Bhopal.

Soon after PM Modi's statement, Owaisi lashed out, saying: "India's PM considers the country's diversity and its pluralism a problem. So, he says such things. Will you strip the country of its pluralism and diversity in the name of a Uniform Civil Code?"

"When he speaks of UCC, he is speaking of Hindu Civil Code. I challenge him to abolish Hindu Undivided Family. Go and tell the Sikhs in Punjab about UCC. See how the reaction is there," he added.

The AIMIM chief further said, "Your government has abolished the scholarship of poor Muslims. If Pasmanda Muslims are being exploited, what are you doing?" Apparently referring to the Nupur Sharma-Prophet Muhammad controversy, he said that the BJP did nothing after its spokespersons insulted "Nabi-e-Kareem [Prophet Muhammad]". PM Modi in his Bhopal address had said that Pasmanda Muslims have become a victim of politics. "Some people are using the politics of appeasement to break the country," he had said.

PM Modi further said that those who favoured triple talaq are just "vote-bank hungry people". "Injustice is being meted out to our Muslim daughters. If triple talaq is a part of Islam, why is it not practised in Pakistan and Indonesia? Triple talaq has been banned even in the Muslim majority countries," he said.

Referring to this, Owaisi said, "Why is Modiji getting so much inspired from Pakistan's law? A law has also been made, but it has not made any difference at the ground level, rather the exploitation of women has increased further. We have always been demanding that social reform will not happen by introducing laws. If a law has to be made, it should be against those who leave their wives and run away even after marriage."
