Ex-Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla Nominated To Rajya Sabha

Meenakshi Jain, Ujjwal Nikam and C Sadanandan Master have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case Ujjwal Nikam, Kerala BJP leader C. Sadanandan Master, former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and historian Meenakshi Jain have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.

The nominations were announced in a notification issued late Saturday night by the Union Home Ministry. According to the statement, the President has nominated the four individuals under the powers granted by Article 80(1)(a) read with Article 80(3) of the Constitution of India.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of Article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate to the Council of States the following persons to fill the vacancies caused due to retirement of nominated members: Shri Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, Shri C. Sadanandan Master, Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Dr. Meenakshi Jain," the notification read.

The four nominees come from distinct and influential backgrounds. Ujjwal Nikam is one of India's most prominent public prosecutors, best known for securing convictions in high-profile cases, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

C Sadanandan Master is a senior BJP leader from Kerala with a strong grassroots presence and decades of political experience, while Harsh Vardhan Shringla is a seasoned diplomat and served as India’s Foreign Secretary and Ambassador to the United States.

Meenakshi Jain is a noted historian and academic with expertise in Indian history and cultural studies.

Rajya Sabha Nominations

Under the Indian Constitution, the President can nominate up to 12 members to the Rajya Sabha. These nominations are reserved for individuals with special knowledge or practical experience in fields such as literature, science, art, and social service.
