Two Villagers 'Mistakenly' Shot By Army Personnel In Arunachal’s Tirap: Report

The event occurred on Friday evening in Chasa village, when two locals, Nokphya Wangdan (28) and Ramwang Wangsu (23), were going home after fishing in a river, they claimed.

New Delhi: Two civilians were "mistakenly" fired at by the Army in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap district on Saturday, according to army sources.

The event occurred on Friday evening in Chasa village, when two locals, Nokphya Wangdan (28) and Ramwang Wangsu (23), were going home after fishing in a river, they claimed, news agency PTI reported.

The Army sent the two locals to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for treatment, they said.

According to Army sources, it was a case of mistaken identification.

According to AMCH superintendent Dr Prasanta Dihingia, one of the injured was shot in the ulna of his hand, while the other was shot in the toe.

Both are now safe, according to him.

A villager who was escorting the injured people to the hospital told the reporters that the two were shot by Army personnel.

“Both of them are orphans. Now, one’s hand is injured and another’s leg is wounded. The government will have to do something for them,” he was quoted by PTI in its report.

The BJP president of Tirap district, Kamrang Tesia, stated that instead of safeguarding the protection of the villagers, the security forces' "senseless act" without appropriate intelligence was causing them to lose confidence.
