New Delhi: In the wake of the recent communal violence in the state, the Tripura Police has sent a notice to Twitter to block 68 users, who have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, for allegedly posting “distorted and objectionable” news items.
The police have also sought user registration details, browsing logs and IP addresses linked to these Twitter users.

The content posted by the social media users had the potential to flare up communal tension in Tripura between different religious communities, which may result in communal riots, the police said.
The users had been found using photographs and videos of some other incidents and fabricated statements to promote enmity between religious groups as part of a criminal conspiracy, the police added.
Earlier this week, the state police had booked two lawyers, who were part of a team of lawyers that released a fact-finding report on the communal violence in Tripura, under the UAPA.

Earlier on October 26, a mosque was vandalized and two shops were burnt down in North Tripura’s Chamtila. Moreover, three houses and a few shops, reportedly belonging to Muslims, were also plundered near North Tripura’s Rowa Bazar. These incidents had happened during a rally carried out by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) following the communal violence in Bangladesh.
