Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas's Fall From Stage At Kaloor Stadium Sparks Safety Concerns — Video

The video showed Thomas losing her balance and falling from the dais while greeting dignitaries including Minister Saji Cherian.

A viral video of Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas' fall from 15-foot stage has thrown spotlight on the safety standards during a cultural event at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor. The video showed Thomas losing her balance and falling from the dais while greeting dignitaries, including Minister Saji Cherian.

In the impact, Uma Thomas reportedly suffered multiple injuries. According to reports, the stage with ribbon barriers appeared inadequately designed without much walking space. The stage also had insufficient safety measures.

After the 15-foot fall, Uma Thomas was admitted to a private hospital where doctors have reported significant improvement in her condition. According to Krishanunni, the hospital’s Medical Director, Thomas is now breathing independently with only intermittent ventilator support.

At the time of the incident, Uma was at the stadium to attend the 'Mridanga Naadam' event, which aimed to set a Guinness World Record with over 12,000 Bharatanatyam dancers, including actor-dancer Divya Unni. After the incident, the manager of the event management company was arrested on Monday for security lapses that contributed to the accident.

A medical board comprising government and private doctors convened to assess her progress, expressing satisfaction with her recovery. “Uma Thomas is perceived and oriented which is a positive sign. There is no need to be concerned about the head injury part,” another doctor said, as per a report on PTI.

The doctor added that her recovery trajectory is positive.

However, the incident has sparked discussions about the need for stringent safety protocols at public events to prevent such mishaps.

Earlier, Congress leaders also raised concerns over alleged lapses in safety measures at the stadium and criticised the safety protocols at the venue.
