Telangana Tourist, Guide Killed In Paragliding Accident In North Sikkim

Police further added that efforts to retrieve the bodies are underway, but the personnel are facing difficulties due to the strong currents of the river

New Delhi: A 23-year-old tourist from Telangana and her guide were killed after they lost balance while paragliding and fell into a river in North Sikkim on Friday, police said.

According to report by news agency PTI, Esha Reddy, a resident of Khammam in Telangana, had gone to Lachung on a trip, police said.

According to the police, Reddy, along with her guide Sandeep Gurung, a resident of Thami Dara in Gangtok, started off from Lachung View Point around 9.30 am on Friday.

However, both of them lost balance due to the strong winds and fell into the Lachung river, after which they were swept away by its strong currents.

Later, following a search operation, that included the police personnel, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Army, their bodies were located in the evening, the officials said.

Initially, police had said that the personnel were facing difficulties in retreiving the bodies due to the strong currents of the river, however, later in the evening, ITBP recovered the two bodies from Lachung river in North Sikkim.

This is not the first paragliding accident in recent times. Earlier, in November last year, a couple from Gujarat had a narrow escape off Nagao beach in Diu as their parachute rope snapped during a parasailing trip. The two had the life jackets on and were saved by the lifeguards almost immediately.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.
