Tamil Nadu Police Open Fire On Gang Rape Accused During Arrest In Krishnagiri

The crime took place on February 19 when the survivor, accompanied by a 35-year-old male relative, was visiting a fort on a hill near the New Bus Stand in Krishnagiri.

Two accused in a gang rape case were injured during a confrontation with the police in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, on Friday. The incident occurred when the police attempted to arrest the suspects, who were allegedly involved in the rape of a 30-year-old woman at knifepoint earlier this month.

The crime took place on February 19 when the survivor, accompanied by a 35-year-old male relative, was visiting a fort on a hill near the New Bus Stand in Krishnagiri. Around 3 PM, four intoxicated men confronted the duo, threatened them with weapons, and robbed the woman of her gold jewellery, reported India Today. Two of the men allegedly raped the woman while the other two recorded the assault on their phones. The attackers also forced the male relative to transfer Rs 7,000 via GPay before fleeing the scene.

After the ordeal, the couple descended the hill, where local residents noticed the woman in distress. Although the couple did not immediately report the incident to the police and instead returned to their hometown of Tirupathur, residents informed the authorities. Police later visited the couple in Tirupathur and registered the woman’s complaint.

Following an investigation, the police identified the four accused as Kalaiarasan and Abhishek from Palayapettai, who were involved in the robbery, and Suresh and Narayanan from Krishnagiri, who allegedly committed the rape. Kalaiarasan and Abhishek were arrested on Wednesday, while Suresh and Narayanan remained at large.

On Friday, the police received a tip-off that Suresh and Narayanan were hiding near the Ponmalai Kuttai Perumal Temple in Krishnagiri. When officers attempted to arrest them, the two accused allegedly attacked the police with knives, injuring two constables, Kumar and Vijayakumar, as per a report on Times of India. In response, the police fired a warning shot in the air. When the accused continued to resist and attempt to flee, officers shot Suresh in the right knee, immobilizing him. Narayanan reportedly fell during the confrontation and suffered a fracture in his right leg.

The injured police officers and the two accused were rushed to Krishnagiri Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.
