Sidhu Behind Bars: Former Cricketer & Politician Assigned Clerk Duty In Jail

Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced one-year jail term by the Supreme Court on May 19 for a road rage case in 1988. He surrendered to the police on May 20.

New Delhi: Former Cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has now become a clerk in Patiala Central Jail. Sidhu has been assigned clerical duty in the jail office. Sidhu has been sentenced to one year in jail in a 34 years old road rage case. He is lodged in Patiala Central Jail where security has also been arranged for him. Sidhu has been given a year of rigorous imprisonment due to which he has been given the duty of a clerk.

After going to jail, Sidhu refused to eat the food given to the inmates citing his health issues.

After his refusal, he was taken for a health check-up at the Rajinder Hospital in Patiala on Monday. According to a report by news agency PTI, Sidhu’s counsel said that he cannot eat any food with fibre and carbohydrates.

His counsel HPS Verma said that Sidhu cannot consume wheat, sugar, 'maida', and some other food items. "He can have berries, papaya, guava, double-toned milk, and food items which do not have fibre and carbohydrates," he added.

Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced one-year jail term by the Supreme Court on May 19 for a road rage case in 1988. He surrendered to the police on May 20. The judgment came four years after Sidhu was let off with a fine of Rs 1,000 over the death of a 65-year-old man.

The apex court had sentenced Sidhu in the 34-year-old case, saying any undue sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine the public confidence in the efficacy of law, PTI reported.
