Shimla Records Highest Minimum Temperature Surpassing Previous Record In 2015

The Himachal Pradesh capital had last seen a minimum temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius on February 23, 2015.

The maximum temperature in Shimla also rose to 23.2 degrees Celsius, 11.4 degrees above normal.

New Delhi: Shimla on Saturday, recorded the warmest night, with temperature recorded at 14.4 degrees Celsius which surpassed Friday's minimum temperature of 14.4 degrees, eleven degrees above normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Himachal Pradesh capital had last seen a minimum temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius on February 23, 2015.

Over the last few days, the mercury has been inching up in the hills and across the North Indian belt. The Met department has forecast a western disturbance across the North Indian belt over the next 24 hours, with the mercury set to drop in the region after a few days.

"The temperatures in most places of Himachal Pradesh are above normal. On Saturday, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous highest for this time of year, at 14.2 degrees Celsius on February 26, 2015. At 29.5 degrees Celsius on February 16, this year, Solan, too, surpassed its previous highest of 28.5 degrees Celsius on February 26, 2021," said Surender Paul, head of IMD, Himachal Pradesh.

"The highest maximum temperature at Solan (located at 1,550 metres above sea level), as per our records, was 28.5 degrees Celsius on February 26, 2021. However, the record was broken on February 16 when the minimum temperature was recorded at 29.5 degrees Celsius," he added.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh recorded a low of 11.8 degrees Celsius, Dehradun 11.1 degrees Celsius, Jammu 11.3 degrees Celsius, Patiala 12.3 degrees Celsius, Ambala 12.8 degrees Celsius, and Jaipur 14.3 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature in Shimla also rose to 23.2 degrees Celsius, 11.4 degrees above normal.

While the mercury crossed 30-degree mark in the state, Una was the hottest during the day recording a maximum of 30.4 degrees Celsius.

Kalpa recorded a maximum temperature of 17.6 degrees Celsius and Keylong 7.2 degrees Celsius while the key tourist resorts of Kufri, Narkanda recorded the day temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius, and 17.4 degrees Celsius.

"Both the minimum and maximum temperatures in the state are currently 4 to 5 degrees above normal. In some areas, the temperatures are 8 to 10 degrees above normal," Paul said.

The local Met office has predicted rain and snow at isolated places in mid and high hills for the next three days till February 21.
