Sandeshkhali Violence: TMC Counters BJP's 'Jungle Raj' Allegations, Calls Out 'Double Engine' States

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) responded on Wednesday to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) allegations of 'jungle raj' in West Bengal by counter-accusing "double-engine" states of fostering such an environment. Kunal Ghosh, TMC spokesperson, denounced the claims regarding Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, asserting that the state government and police were taking necessary actions against any instances of violence.

According to news agency PTI, Ghosh criticised the BJP's stance, stating, "We are opposing the tirade against the state in the name of atrocities on women."

Ghosh highlighted that according to central government data, West Bengal, particularly Kolkata, is safe for women, countering the narrative surrounding incidents in Sandeshkhali. The Sandeshkhali region gained attention following an altercation between Enforcement Directorate officials and supporters of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh. Sheikh has been absconding since the altercation.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia demanded West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation amidst protests and clashes over alleged sexual harassment incidents in Sandeshkhali. Bhatia accused the TMC of presiding over lawlessness and claimed that Banerjee protects those accused of crimes. He asserted, "There is jungle raj in West Bengal."

Bhatia further criticised the state government's handling of law and order, pointing to the involvement of the Calcutta High Court in addressing the situation. He called for Banerjee's resignation, stating, "Mamata Banerjee has become a 'bhakshak' (predator) from a 'rakshak' (protector)."

Bhatia remarked that it is clear to every citizen that the rule of law doesn't exist in West Bengal. "Rather it is the law of anarchic ruler Mamata Banerjee which prevails there, he said.Banerjee has no right to remain in the post and, If she had even a little bit of shame left, she should immediately tender her resignation," he said.

"If you do not resign, don't underestimate people. You will be uprooted, that is for sure," the BJP spokesperson commented.

In response to the BJP's demands, Shashi Panja, Minister for Women and Child Development, questioned the accountability of BJP ministers, particularly in states where crimes against women and marginalized communities are reported. Panja argued, "Why should the chief minister of Manipur not resign over the ongoing unrest in that state?"
