Samjhauta Express services restored after Abhinandan's return; train to run from India on Sunday

New Delhi: After being suspended for a couple of days, Samjhauta Express train connecting India and Pakistan will resume its services from March 3. “The Samjhauta Express will leave for Pakistan from Delhi on Sunday after both Indian and Pakistan agreed to operationalise services at their ends,” a senior railway official told news agency PTI. The announcement came a day after Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was released by Pakistan. Officials informed that the first train will run from New Delhi to Attari on March 3. While Pakistan had cancelled its services right after an air strike by the Indian Air Force, India too cancelled the operations of the Samjhauta Express on February 28. The train will start running from the Indian side on Sunday, while on the Pakistan side it will leave from Lahore on Monday during its return journey. From the Indian side, Samjhauta Express runs from New Delhi to Attari and from Pakistani, side it runs from Lahore to Wagah. Initially, the train started with offering a direct run all the way from Delhi in India to Lahore in Pakistan but now the train stops at Attari border where the passengers have to change trains and board the Pakistani rake. Started on July 22, 1976, the Samjhauta Express comprises six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach. The train service was started under the Shimla Agreement that settled the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. The train departs from Lahore on Mondays and Thursdays. As per reports, post the Pulwama terror attack which took lives of as many as 40 CRPF jawans, the footfall of on the train has drastically fallen down. Pakistan had cancelled the train service from its end after an IAF flighter jets troop dropped bombs on the biggest training camp run by terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan's Balakot region.
