'When You Pay Peanuts, You Get Monkeys': Sudha Murty Raises Salary Issue Of Teachers In RS
She highlighted the struggles teachers face, beyond their primary role. Many educators, despite their training, are forced into commercial work against their will due to low wages.

Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murthy on Thursday highlighted the plight of teachers in the Parliament and called for an increase in their salaries. The philanthropist, while speaking in the Upper House of the Parliament, highlighted the performance of teachers, their salary benefits, pensions, and maternity leave for female teachers.
She also drew a 'stark comparison' between government teachers and contractual teachers, saying that an additional teacher gets one-tenth of the salary of a government teacher.
"We always say teachers are the best. But how many of the teachers are good when you have aided schools and aided colleges? They hire a teacher who is really suffering a lot. They get a salary for 10 months, not 12 months. They don't get maternity leave. The management makes them very busy in the admission process at times," Sudha Murthy said.

"A regular teacher gets an extremely good salary. Thanks to the Prime Minister's salary system for primary schools and high schools. But additional teacher, what they get they get pretense, maybe 110th of that. But, their number of teachers teaching our students is more than regular teachers, but their salary is one-time. And, even though they work for the year 2025, they won't get a pension. They will have a lot of financial difficulties," Murthy added.
Teacher's Extra Responsibilities
She also highlighted the struggles teachers face, taking on extra responsibilities beyond their primary role. Many educators, despite their training, are forced into commercial work against their will due to low wages.
"When you expect teachers to teach well and make the education system better, how can it be possible? When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. So I look at the teacher's plight in the education system where they do additional work. And, teachers who are trained in the educational system are doing more commercial work when it is against their wishes and don't get paid," she also said.
"I request that management should give them a good salary, and the government should make a policy to check the management system, and check whether the teachers are getting good salaries or not. Because there is no control and check, and balance in private and government-aided schools as well as colleges," she further added.
