Punjab Election 2022: Ex-CM Amarinder Singh To Contest Polls In Alliance With BJP

"Our aim is to win Punjab assembly elections and we will," Singh said during the press conference in Chandigarh.

New Delhi: Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has announced that he will contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections in alliance with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), and Dhindsa's party, which rebelled against the Akali Dal.

"Our aim is to win Punjab assembly elections and we will," Singh said during the press conference in Chandigarh.

After meeting with senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Captain Amarinder Singh made the announcement of getting in alliance with BJP for the upcoming Punjab polls.

Singh left the Congress in October after resigning as Punjab chief minister in a power struggle with state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu. He subsequently formed his own political party, the Punjab Lok Congress.

On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the BJP is in negotiations with Singh and former Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa to form an alliance ahead of the state Assembly elections.

Punjab Elections 2022

The Punjab assembly election, which is slated for next year, will be an interesting battle since former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has left the Congress and formed his own party, Punjab Lok Congress, which has formed an alliance with the BJP.

In the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, Congress obtained an absolute majority with 77 seats, deposing the SAD-BJP government after ten years in power.

The Aam Aadmi Party was the second-largest party, with 20 members in the 117-member Punjab Legislative Assembly. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) received only 15 seats, while the BJP received three.
