President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of 77th Independence Day.

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday addressed the nation on the eve of 77th Independence Day. During her address she said that every citizen of the country has many identities but being an Indian is above all of them. "Each Indian has many identities like caste, creed, language but identity as Indian citizen is above all," she said. The Preisdent paid tribute to women freedom fighters in her address and urged to prioritise women epmowerment. She noted extensively contribution of women in every field of development and service to country. 

"On the eve of Independence Day, I join my fellow citizens in paying grateful tribute to the known and unknown freedom fighters whose sacrifices have made it possible for India to regain its rightful place in the comity of nations. Great women freedom fighters like Matangini Hazra and Kanaklata Baruah laid down their lives for Bharat-Mata. Maa Kasturba matched the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi every step of the way on the difficult path of Satyagraha," she said. 

  • Addressing the issue of inflation, Murmu applauded the efforts of the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India saying, "Inflation at global level remains cause for worry but government of India and RBI have managed to contain it." 
  • The President underlined India's G20 Presidency this year saying, "India has not only regained its rightful place on world stage, but has also enhanced its standing in international order. India not only established itself on a global platform but also increased its prestige." 
  • Speaking on the New Education Policy, Murmu said that the changes have started to come. "Education is greatest tool of social empowerment and National Education Policy has started making difference. It will bring several new changes in the country in the coming time," she said. 
  • Lauding ISRO for the launch of Chandrayaan-3, the President noted, "Aspirations of new India have infinite dimensions. ISRO keeps scaling new heights and setting higher benchmarks of excellence."
  • Murmu urged the scientists and policymakers across the world to give special attention to global warming and climate change which are leading to leading to flash floods and droughts, warning that a "culture of greed" is taking "the world away from nature".
  • "One area that merits urgent attention of scientists and policymakers all over the world is climate change. We have faced numerous extreme-weather events in recent years. Parts of India have faced extraordinary floods. At the same time, there are places facing drought," Murmu said.
  • She stressed on the word "empathy" as the secret of survival of tribal communities through the ages. "They have empathy for all Mother Nature's fellow children, flora and fauna alike. Sometimes, however, the world seems to be suffering from a deficit of empathy," she said.
