PM Modi, Sultan Of Brunei Hold Key Talks On Defence, Trade, Other Sectors; MoUs Signed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sultan of Brunei held talks on various areas including defence, trade and investment, health, and cultural and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah held delegation level talks on Wednesday during Modi's maiden visit to the Southeast Asian country. 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval were also present alongside Modi. 

Modi noted "decades-old cultural ties" between the two countries during the meeting. He also made a mention about the Sultan of Brunei being the Chief Guest during the Republic Day celebration in India in 2018. 

I am immensely happy that at the starting of my third term, I got the opportunity to visit Brunei and discuss the future.

"Brunei's significant partnership in India's Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision is a guarantee of a bright future for us," he said. 

Both sides signed and exchanged Memorandums of Understanding during the meeting. The two leaders held discussions on bilateral relations in multiple areas defence, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health and pharmaceuticals, capacity building, culture and people-to-people ties, said Ministry of External spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. 

Taking to his X account, PM Modi said: "Delighted to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Our talks were wide-ranging and included ways to further cement bilateral ties between our nations. We are going to further expand trade ties, commercial linkages and people-to-people exchanges." 

Earlier in the day, PM inaugurated the new Chancery premises of the High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam. 

On Tuesday, Modi visited the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque where he was received by Brunei’s Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin.
