Parliamentary Panel Meet: Opposition MPs Demand Summoning Of SEBI Chief On Adani Issue, BJP Opposes

The demand was strongly opposed by senior BJP lawmakers on the panel, including Chairman Jayant Sinha, former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Sushil Modi, and SS Ahluwalia.

New Delhi: MPs from the opposition called on the Standing Committee for Finance to summon the head of SEBI and other senior RBI officials to discuss the Hindenburg report and its findings regarding industrialist Gautam Adani on Wednesday, reported news agency ANI.

The demand was made by Congress lawmakers Manish Tewari, a former Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP, Gaurav Gogoi, Pramod Tiwari, Pinaki Misra, Amar Patnaik, and Saugata Roy of the BJD, among others.

During a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, Congressman Manish Tewari made the demand; however, members of the BJP opposed it, claiming that the matter was under investigation.

The demand was strongly opposed by senior BJP lawmakers on the panel, including Chairman Jayant Sinha, former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Sushil Modi, and SS Ahluwalia.

According to reliable sources, lawmakers from the ruling party claimed that the matter in question was pending litigation, preventing the panel from discussing it, reported ANI.

MPs from the opposition demanded that regulatory authorities like SEBI and RBI be summoned to discuss the issue of safeguarding the nation's interests and whether or not all measures were taken in this regard. MPs from the opposition said that because this is a regulatory issue and falls under the Finance Committee's purview, the panel can summon the authorities in charge.

This request from opposition MPs comes at a time when the Parliament has been stuck because opposition parties are still insisting that the government form a JPC to deal with the Adani problem.

It is discovered that the board Director has requested that the MPs present the solicitation recorded as a hard copy.

In the wake of the Hindenburg-Adani dispute, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a strong attack on the government, claiming that "rules were changed" in some sectors to favor the businessman and linking the rise of the Adani group to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the debate on the motion of thanks to the President's address in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, the first opposition leader to speak, said that the relationship with Gautam Adani began when Narendra Modi was Gujarat's Chief Minister. He also said that "real magic" started after 2014, when the businessman rose from 609th to second place in the rich list worldwide.

"Relationships begin many years ago when Narendra Modi was Gujarat's Chief Minister...one man stood shoulder to shoulder with PM Modi, he was loyal to the PM and helped Mr Modi construct the idea of a 'Resurgent Gujarat'. The real magic began when PM Modi reached the national capital in 2014," Rahul Gandhi said addressing the Lok Sabha.

The Finance Committee convened in the Parliament Complex to consider and approve draft reports on Demands for Grants and to receive a briefing on "Issues related to MPLAD Scheme" from Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation representatives.
